This resource, Seed & Seed Heads Mark Making creates a single page in a sketchbook, but as it takes over 10 lessons to complete and includes a broad range of media and skills, I am describing it as a mini unit of work. During this mini unit of work, students draw the seeds heads in a broad range of media, with a focus on mark making. This download includes:
- A template to trace to create the 9 squares and title on the page.
- A one-page PDF featuring 9 squares of seeds and seed heads to draw.
- A one-page PDF which is a good example of this completed task.
- The good example is also included as a one-page PowerPoint so you can show it on screen.
- A 4-page written unit of work.
Materials required: Soft Pencils, Fine Liners, Black Ball Point Pens, Crayola, Black Watercolour, Instant Coffee, Dip Pens, Black Ink. Optional: Ferby’s. This is a long list! Feel free to substitute media that you don’t have.*

This project is just what I was looking for as a mark-making exercise for textiles students that they can then translate into stitch.
The photos are excellent and a worked ‘Good Example’ is so helpful that I can put on screen for the class.
Thank you for such a well-thought out resource for a busy teacher!
Hi Anne, I’m so glad you found this useful. It’s interesting to read that you are taking this into stitch! I hope it goes well 🙂
