Bio

Jess Hall is a Naarm/Melbourne based, multi-disciplinary artist working with painting, drawing, embroidery and soft sculpture. Trained as a painter, printmaker and textile designer, the work responds to the intersection of these disciplines, often using a descriptive drawing approach and embroidery techniques to express tactility and a love of pattern. Jess completed first class Honours at Queensland College of Art (2005), a Master of Fine Art at VCAM (2010) and the Bachelor of Textiles (Design) with distinction (2021) at RMIT. Jess’ work has been purchased for private and public collections and has featured in group and solo exhibitions locally and internationally, including craft biennales in South Korea and Japan and residencies in France. Jess’ work has been selected for numerous art prizes, including the Fisher’s Ghost Art Award, Clayton Utz Art Award, Swan Hill Print and Drawing Award, the Rick Amor Self-Portrait Prize and The Elaine Bermingham National Watercolour Prize in Landscape Painting. Jess works as a sessional lecturer at RMIT in the school of Fashion and Textiles and most recently was selected for a public art commission with the Metro Tunnel Creative Projects Hoarding at Anzac Station. https://www.jesshall.com.au/

Experience in Schools

I am currently employed as a sessional lecturer at RMIT. I taught a course in semester 1 called Textile Design Illustration in the Bachelor of Textiles (Design) program. The role included presenting information, practical demonstration of painting, drawing and textile design skills, marking with academic judgement and writing content. I also delivered practical guest tutorials on contemporary and mixed media approaches to embroidery in the course Textile Transformations. I have worked as an artist in residence in two high schools; Siena College Girls School in Melbourne and Somerville House Girls School in Brisbane. I have two primary aged children and would enjoy teaching primary school level also.
