International Dot Day is a global celebration of creativity, courage, and collaboration, observed annually on September 15th. It was inspired by the book The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds, which tells the story of a girl named Vashti who, with the encouragement of her teacher, discovers her artistic potential starting with a simple dot. The book encourages people to “make their mark and see where it takes you,” promoting creativity and self-expression.

The day encourages students, teachers, and people around the world to embrace their creativity, take risks, and make a positive impact. Schools and communities often participate by organizing art projects, discussions, and activities centred around making dots and expressing individual creativity in various forms.

This Dot Day Mark Making project asks students to experiment with media and mark-making on circles (dots!) of paper. Together, they make their mark and create a collaborative artwork.

Included in this download:

  • An 8-slide PowerPoint
  • A lesson plan
  • A template for various size circles.
  • A ‘Dot Day’ title.

Materials Required: A large sheet of black paper, drawing paper that can go through a printer for the circles (or draw around lids, etc), a range of media e.g. black pens, charcoal, ballpoint pens, soft drawing pencils, glue and scissors.

Sarah Crowther – The Arty Teacher

I set up The Arty Teacher because I have a passion for my subject that I want to share with other art teachers around the world.

I have been a high school art teacher for over 20 years, so I understand what it’s like to be in front of a class of students, often with very different abilities and attitudes.

I wanted to develop resources that would help teachers to bring out the best in every student in every class. I also wanted to free-up staff from time-consuming lesson preparation to let them focus instead on delivering exciting, motivating, dynamic lessons, supported by excellent resources.
