Debating the Value of Art

How do you debate the value of art with students? Why is one painting worth millions and another only a few hundred pounds? What different factors influence price? What is blue-chip art? During this lesson, students will debate their initial thoughts, be introduced to a range of factors which influence price, learn about interesting artworks that have achieved ridiculous prices, and then, using this knowledge, debate the value of a range of artworks. This download includes:

  • A 12-slide PowerPoint (pictured above).
  • A 3-page lesson plan. This includes everything you need to structure the lesson plus a challenge, extension task and background information on artists/artworks so you are the instant expert.
  • 6 artworks for students to debate(2 on a page).

This lesson has been designed to fill a 50min – 1hr lesson and includes an extension task.

No materials are required except perhaps some scrap paper for notes.

Sarah Crowther – The Arty Teacher

I set up The Arty Teacher because I have a passion for my subject that I want to share with other art teachers around the world.

I have been a high school art teacher for over 20 years, so I understand what it’s like to be in front of a class of students, often with very different abilities and attitudes.

I wanted to develop resources that would help teachers to bring out the best in every student in every class. I also wanted to free-up staff from time-consuming lesson preparation to let them focus instead on delivering exciting, motivating, dynamic lessons, supported by excellent resources.
