Description

These 50 art critique cards are written so they can be used to analyse any artwork. I designed these to stimulate discussion, but I can also see that they could be used to encourage meaningful writing about art.

Included in this download:

  • 50 art critique cards.
  • A list of 15 different ways to use the art critique cards in a lesson to promote discussion or writing.
  • A glossary to help students who may not be familiar with a word.

These cards can be used to analyse any artwork, but I have also included 9 artworks to analyse. These have been chosen for their very obvious use of line, highlights and shadows, contrast, depth, colour, movement, texture or emotion.

Example questions:

  • Is there a focal point in this artwork that captures your attention? If so, how does it achieve this?
  • Are the textures in this artwork noticeable or significant? How do they influence the overall feel?
  • Do the lines in this artwork suggest movement or stillness? How do they achieve this?

There are tricky words on the cards such as ‘composition’ and ‘tactile quality’ but these are explained in the accompanying glossary. I believe these are suitable, with your support, for students aged 11 – adult.

I suggest you laminate the complete sheets of cards then cut them into cards. You’ll be able to use them year after year!

Sarah Crowther – The Arty Teacher

I set up The Arty Teacher because I have a passion for my subject that I want to share with other art teachers around the world.

I have been a high school art teacher for over 20 years, so I understand what it’s like to be in front of a class of students, often with very different abilities and attitudes.

I wanted to develop resources that would help teachers to bring out the best in every student in every class. I also wanted to free-up staff from time-consuming lesson preparation to let them focus instead on delivering exciting, motivating, dynamic lessons, supported by excellent resources.
