Artist’s Bedroom in a Shoebox

By The Arty Teacher - January 15, 2025

Art teacher Maria Romanski recently shared these amazing photos of her students’ work on social media. For their holiday homework, she challenged them to design an artist’s bedroom inside a shoebox. The students’ creativity and enthusiasm shine through in every detail!

Maria explained that she set this task for Year 7 and/or 8 students (Ages 11 – 13).

“The brief was very straightforward, to create a bedroom in a shoebox inspired by the work of a 20th century artist.” said Maria.

She gave them a suggested list of artists but also said it could be any famous 20th-century artist.

It’s such a great way to get them looking at artists in an imaginative and independent way and shows the value of setting a homework that takes time.

Maria stated that she can’t take credit for this project as she had first seen it shared by another art teacher on social media; and so the inspiration goes on!

Artists used here are Mattise, Van Gogh, Kandinsky, and Banksy. If you want to run this project and give your students a list of artists, you could consider Yayoi Kusma, Frida Kahlo, Kehinde Wiley, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Andy Warhol, Salvador Dali, and Alma Thomas. They all have striking, easily recognisable work.
