Bio
Dr Ann Russell is a mixed media artist and art educator who investigates transcendence, sacredness, memory, time and space. She draws heavily from nature; especially exploring our spiritual and psychic connection to plants, animals, water and sky. Ann’s work is included in numerous public and private collections, including Pine Rivers Art Gallery. Her work has been selected for finalist exhibitions for numerous notable art awards, including the Churchie Emerging Art Award and Woollahra Small Sculpture Prize. She has extensive experience teaching art at secondary and community levels and is passionate about the power of art to promote wellbeing. From her studio in Cashmere, she holds a variety of retreats and workshops for people of all ages. In her work, she is trying to undo our understanding of the world and our existence in it as linear and rational; creating not just depictions of other worlds, but also ‘thinning the veil’ by creating portals through which the audience can move to liminal spaces. She draws heavily from nature; especially indicating our spiritual and psychic connection to plants, animals, water and sky. Ann works with mixed media in both two and three dimensions. Layering is an important part of her work as it creates nuanced strata of meaning and symbolism.
