I’ve created this ‘Creating with Shadows’ video as a home learning project. I had great fun making this and experimenting with different media. Your students will too. I’ve deliberately selected different media that your students might have at home, such as coffee, ball point pen and food colouring.
Play the video and then start getting creative!

Hi Sarah – I’ve recently discovered your site and cant tell you how useful and inspiring it’s been for me. I am currently transforming schemes of work for September to incorporate distance learning, and videos like this are going to be an invaluable resource for me and my students.
Just wanted to say a big thank you for your hard work and generosity in sharing these wonderful videos and ideas. Hope you and your family are safe and well. Best wishes, Hannah x
What a lovely message. Thank you. I’m really pleased you’re finding the videos useful. Sarah
This is very cool. I’m curious, as a teacher, how would you go about marking/grading a student if they did this project?
Hi Shelby, Thanks for your comment. To grade the work I would ask students to photograph their work and upload it to Showbie (which is what I use). I would then assess the photo. I know that’s more difficult than assessing the real thing. I’d look at how complex their shadow was and how they had controlled the media. I would be generous with the grade as it would have been completed without me.
Love your videos! Great resource for me and the students. Thank you!
Hi Laura, Thank you for your feedback. I’m glad you’ve found the resources useful. Sarah
I couldn’t wait to post this on my e-learning page! I really hope some of my kiddos try this! Too many projects – not enough time! LOL
