Description

Big Graffiti Face Project

If you are looking for a project where students create exciting, experimental graffiti artworks, where each student’s work is different, and they explore media and techniques, you have come to the right place. During this project, students will:

  • Research and analyse the style and techniques of a chosen street artist(s).
  • Experiment with creating textured surfaces, using both real and implied texture.
  • Explore how various media interact with different textured surfaces.
  • Create a range of compositions to inform a final artwork.
  • Create a mixed-media artwork inspired by your chosen artist and experimentation. This will include an optional card concertina (see above) and a large artwork.
  • Reflect on what has worked well and what you might improve.

Included in this download:

  • A 29-slide PowerPoint that includes objectives, assessment criteria, an overview of the project, an example research page, and step-by-step images to create a textured surface. Information about real and implied texture, guidance for experimentation, slides on canvas format and compositions, including an example composition sketchbook page. Step-by-step images for creating a final piece. Wow, yes, a lot.
  • A written unit of work that gives detailed information about each stage of the project and includes materials required for each stage and optional homework tasks.
  • A handout to support experimentation.
  • Two pages of graffiti fonts.
  • A one-column assessment rubric.

Materials required: Large pieces of cardboard, pencils, pens such as sharpies, gesso, acrylic paint, stencils, sponges, polyfilla (aka Spackle in USA and Spakfilla in Aus), Art Graf.

The stencil I used for this project is available on Amazon.co.uk and Amazon.com #Ad

Art Graf (water-soluble graphite) is also available on Amazon.co.uk and Amazon.com #Ad

There are other graffiti resources and other big units of work on The Arty Teacher website.

Sarah Crowther – The Arty Teacher

I set up The Arty Teacher because I have a passion for my subject that I want to share with other art teachers around the world.

I have been a high school art teacher for over 20 years, so I understand what it’s like to be in front of a class of students, often with very different abilities and attitudes.

I wanted to develop resources that would help teachers to bring out the best in every student in every class. I also wanted to free-up staff from time-consuming lesson preparation to let them focus instead on delivering exciting, motivating, dynamic lessons, supported by excellent resources.
