Drawing a Leaf

Drawing a Leaf

Drawing a leaf may sound simple, but there is so much to learn from this task.  This task works well with mixed-ability groups, including low-ability students, because students cut out and draw around a leaf first which gives their drawing a great start.  Students will:

  • Practice their observational drawing skills.
  • Practice their cutting skills.
  • Learn that good presentation can really elevate a drawing.

This download includes:

  • A detailed lesson plan.
  • A 3-slide presentation that states the learning objectives and shows a good example of the sketchbook page and a large picture of the drawing of the leaf.
  • 4 leaves for students to choose to draw.
  • A page of coloured leaves for an extension task.

There are many more drawing and natural forms art lessons and projects on The Arty Teacher website.

Materials required: Paper or sketchbooks, coloured paper such as sugar paper, drawing pencils, brown packing paper, glue and scissors.
