This project results in students in creating a beautiful, detailed charcoal drawing of star anise on a distressed surface. They will learn:

  • How to create a collaged/mixed media background.
  • That manipulated surfaces create an interesting artwork.

This download includes:

  • 3 amazing images of grouped star anise.
  • A detailed 2-page lesson plan.
  • An 11-slide PowerPoint presentation that includes step-by-step images to support your students drawing star anise on a mixed media background.

Materials required: cardboard, newspaper, glue, brushes, craft knives, white acrylic, charcoal pencils.

There are more mixed media projects, collage resources, charcoal projects and complete units of work on The Arty Teacher website.

  • Star Anise for Christmas

I’ve done this project with academically challenged students in Switzerland and I must say, it was brilliant. They loved tearing apart the cardboard, then finding newspaper clippings that were meaningful to them, the distressing and finally the pencil and coal drawings. They were surprised how good their end results were and how artistic it all looks now in the hallway.
Some of my students learnt watching an object closely and then finding the bright and darker parts for the first time.
    I can only recommend.

    Thank you Miss Artyteacher!

Sarah Crowther – The Arty Teacher

I set up The Arty Teacher because I have a passion for my subject that I want to share with other art teachers around the world.

I have been a high school art teacher for over 20 years, so I understand what it’s like to be in front of a class of students, often with very different abilities and attitudes.

I wanted to develop resources that would help teachers to bring out the best in every student in every class. I also wanted to free-up staff from time-consuming lesson preparation to let them focus instead on delivering exciting, motivating, dynamic lessons, supported by excellent resources.
