During this 1hr 5mins course, you will increase your knowledge about how to make experimental surfaces to draw or paint on.

Once you have watched the professional development, you will be able to download a certificate that includes your name, the name of the course, and the duration. Although the video is 1.05 hours, the duration of the course is 6 hours to allow you time to complete the tasks within.

This course is ideal if you are new to teaching or simply wish to develop a more experimental approach to your teaching.

The course includes the 8 downloadable good examples that I make in the video, which you can use as inspiration with your students. It also includes the 8 images that I use to create these examples. This will enable you to teach the skills you learn immediately.

Materials Required:

  • Gum paper tape,
  • Cartridge paper (drawing paper),
  • A board to stretch paper on. It’s time-saving to be able to stretch paper on a number of boards.
  • Watercolour.  I use tubes of watercolour but you could use pans.
  • A couple of coloured Inks – your choice of colour.
  • Quink Ink.
  • Brushes for watercolour and a hog hair/bristle brush.
  • Unwanted dress-makers pattern.
  • White tissue paper.
  • Artgraf (which is water soluble graphite) Alternatively, you could use black watercolour.
  • Charcoal pencils.
  • PVA glue. (Called Mod Podge in USA)
  • Craft knife.
  • I use images of Jim Dines hearts for one task, so you will need to download these to complete that particular task.

I use graffiti artist Phil Frost’s book as inspiration for one task. You can find his book on Amazon.co.uk #Ad. You can also find images of his work online.

  • Experimental surfaces! Loved it!!

This was fantastic! Quite a lot of new and old time favourites to work along too. Again, I did this over a few days in my summer holidays, thoroughly enjoying learning new tricks but also gaining extra knowledge on some of my classroom favourites. The print outs and examples are at a very high standard, ready for high aiming lessons. Thank you for this!!

You’re never too old to learn new skills. Seeing this resource pop up was too good an opportunity to miss. A quick scoot at the trailer was enough…

An easy guide and step by step, definitely a course that will be useful for students, as they learn new skills and techniques.

As a practitioner this is a fabulous set of experimental techniques that delivers, offering scope for exciting outcomes.

Sarah Crowther – The Arty Teacher

I set up The Arty Teacher because I have a passion for my subject that I want to share with other art teachers around the world.

I have been a high school art teacher for over 20 years, so I understand what it’s like to be in front of a class of students, often with very different abilities and attitudes.

I wanted to develop resources that would help teachers to bring out the best in every student in every class. I also wanted to free-up staff from time-consuming lesson preparation to let them focus instead on delivering exciting, motivating, dynamic lessons, supported by excellent resources.
