Use the ‘Talking About Art’ placemat as a stimulus when asking your students to talk about art. The download includes a document that explains how to use the placemat for a starter activity, where you divide your class into groups and give them time to discuss the sentence starters, and then you ask for feedback. Starting with the speech bubble above the mouth and working around clockwise, the questions use higher-order questioning inspired by Blooms Taxonomy.
I have also provided a blank ‘Talking About Art’ worksheet should you want a written response.
A really useful starter that could be used with any artist or artwork.
Art literacy.
My district is utilizing Kagan Structures and Blended Learning so this is perfect for my small groups. It’s not specific so I can use it over and over with different pieces of art. Thanks!

I set up The Arty Teacher because I have a passion for my subject that I want to share with other art teachers around the world.
I have been a high school art teacher for over 20 years, so I understand what it’s like to be in front of a class of students, often with very different abilities and attitudes.
I wanted to develop resources that would help teachers to bring out the best in every student in every class. I also wanted to free-up staff from time-consuming lesson preparation to let them focus instead on delivering exciting, motivating, dynamic lessons, supported by excellent resources.
