What is a Private Art Tutor?

A private art tutor is an individual hired to provide one-on-one art lessons to help students develop their artistic skills and knowledge. This might take place at the art tutors home or studio, or at the students house.

Private art tutors are often hired by parents when a student needs extra support completing exams, for home schooling or for fun clubs.

What Skills does a Private Art Tutor need?

To become a private art tutor, you should be good at teaching, patient, and have strong art skills to help others learn and improve their creativity and artistic abilities.

What Qualification does a Private Art Tutor Need?

Qualifications for a private art tutor can vary, but typically, they should have lots of experience in art, often demonstrated through:

  1. Educational Background: A degree in fine arts, visual arts, or a related field may be beneficial.
  2. Artistic Expertise: Proficiency and expertise in various art mediums, techniques, and styles.
  3. Teaching Experience: Previous experience in teaching or tutoring art, either independently or through formal educational settings.
  4. A Website or Portfolio: A diverse and impressive portfolio showcasing the tutor’s own artwork and artistic capabilities.
  5. Communication Skills: Strong communication and interpersonal skills to effectively convey artistic concepts and guide students.
  6. Patience and Adaptability: Patience and the ability to adapt teaching methods to suit individual learning styles.
  7. References: Positive references or recommendations from previous students or colleagues in the field.

While formal qualifications may be important, practical experience, artistic talent, and the ability to effectively impart knowledge and skills to students are crucial aspects of a private art tutor’s qualifications.

Different Types of Private Art Tutor

Different tutors may specialise in different things such as medium, e.g. watercolour, or style, e.g. realism, abstraction or impressionism. Art tutors may specialise in a particular age group or focus on preparing students for exams or preparing a portfolio for the next stage of their artistic career.

If you want to become a Private Art Tutor, you can complete some of the following steps whilst still at school.

  2. Create a Diverse Portfolio: Develop a comprehensive portfolio showcasing a range of artworks, demonstrating versatility and creativity.
  3. Teach Art to Peers: Offer informal art lessons to classmates or friends, gaining initial teaching experience.
  4. Participate in Art Clubs: Join or start art clubs at school to engage with peers, share knowledge, and foster a collaborative artistic environment.
  5. Assist Art Teachers: Volunteer to assist art teachers or offer to help organize art-related events within the school.
