What is a Buddha Board?

By The Arty Teacher - May 23, 2023

On Facebook, I read a conversation between two art teachers saying how much they liked using Buddha Boards in the art room. I had no idea what they were talking about, so I jumped on Google to find out.

I discovered…

A Buddha Board is a type of painting board that allows you to create temporary artwork using only water. It consists of a flat surface, typically made of high-quality materials like rice paper or canvas, and a stand that holds the board upright. The surface is coated with a special paint that reacts to water, creating a temporary image that fades away as the water evaporates.

They are easy to use.

Buddha Boards are incredibly simple to use. All you need is water and a brush. Students can simply dip the brush in the water and then start painting on the board. As the water evaporates, the image fades away, leaving a blank canvas for the next creation. This simplicity allows students to focus on their creativity without being bogged down by the technical aspects of painting.

Although the Buddha board is fairly expensive, at least it only uses water once you have it and can be used again and again.

Promote Mindfulness.

We read a lot in the press about the mental health of young people, or maybe you have even be touched by it in your family. The calming, no-pressure activity of using a Buddha board is very relaxing. Many students find drawing difficult and compare themselves to their peers. Knowing that your drawing is going to fade away, takes away all of that anxiety.

Optional Photography

Some students love photography and you could give them the option of photographing anything they are pleased with. Purely optional of course.
