By continuing to study art, you open the door to a large range of exciting art careers. If you want a career that you are excited to get up for each day, read on.

Perhaps you are at school and love your art lessons but don’t really know what to do with it? Below is a list of art careers. May may well find something you hadn’t thought of before.

Animator

An animator is a person who creates moving images using drawings, digital software or 3D models. They work with film makers, TV producers and video game developers to create animated sequences that tell a story or convey a message. Animators use different techniques such as keyframe animation, motion graphics, and stop-motion animation to create their work. They may also work with other artists and writers to develop a concept or story that they will animate. To make a living, animators can work on a freelance basis or be employed by animation studios, advertising agencies, film studios or game development companies. They need to be creative, patient and have a strong sense of storytelling.

Architect

An architect is someone who designs buildings and structures. They use their creativity, maths and problem-solving skills to come up with designs that are both beautiful and functional. Architects work with clients to understand their needs and requirements, and then use their knowledge of engineering, construction, and design to create a plan for the building. They create detailed drawings and models of the building to show how it will look and how it will function. Architects need to consider factors such as safety, accessibility, and environmental impact when designing a building. Art Archivist

An art archivist is a person who takes care of historical art documents and artefacts. They work to preserve and organise important documents, such as letters, sketches, and photographs, that are related to art history. Art archivists need to have a good understanding of art history, as well as excellent organisational skills. They may work in museums, art galleries, or other organisations that collect and preserve art-related materials. Art archivists play an important role in helping people to learn about the past and understand how art has evolved over time. They ensure that historical documents and artefacts are protected and available for research, so that people can continue to learn from them for years to come.

Art Auctioneer

An art auctioneer is a person who runs art auctions. They work for auction houses and help to sell artworks to people who want to buy them. They are responsible for introducing each artwork to the bidders and starting the bidding process. They keep the bidding going until a final price is reached and the artwork is sold. Art auctioneers need to have a good understanding of art, as well as excellent communication and negotiation skills. A caricaturist is an artist who creates funny drawings of people that exaggerate their features. They might draw someone with a big nose or huge ears, for example, to make them look silly. Caricaturists often work in public places like parks or fairs and draw pictures of people who are willing to pay for them. Some caricaturists work for newspapers or magazines and draw political figures or celebrities. To be a good caricaturist, you need to have a good sense of humour and be able to draw quickly.

Ceramicist

A ceramicist is an artist who creates pottery and other objects out of clay. They start by shaping and moulding the clay into their desired shape, before firing it in a kiln to harden it. Ceramicists can create a wide range of objects, including cups, bowls, plates, and decorative sculptures. They can use different techniques to create patterns and textures on their pieces, such as carving, stamping, or painting with glazes. Some ceramicists may specialize in a specific style or tradition, while others may experiment with different techniques to create unique pieces.

Computer Generated Imagery (CGI) Artist

A computer generated imagery (CGI) artist is a person who creates digital visual effects using computer software. They work with film-makers, TV producers, and game developers to create realistic or imaginative visual effects that cannot be achieved using traditional filming methods. CGI artists use different software such as Maya, Zbrush, and Houdini to create 3D models, animations, and special effects. Fashion Designer

They may also work with actors, crew members, and post-production professionals to create the final product. Fine Artist

A fine artist is a person who creates artwork for the purpose of expressing their ideas, emotions or imagination. They use different mediums like paint, pencil, clay, or digital tools to make art. They can create portraits, landscapes, sculptures or abstract works. Fine artists have different ways of making a living. Some sell their artwork to galleries, museums, or private collectors. Furniture Designer

A furniture designer is a person who creates unique and functional furniture pieces. They use their creativity and design skills to come up with new furniture ideas, often considering factors like materials, colours, textures and ergonomics. Furniture designers may work for large furniture companies, or they may have their own business creating custom furniture pieces for clients. They usually start by sketching out their designs, and then use computer-aided design (CAD) programs to create detailed plans. After that, they choose the materials and oversee the production process to ensure that their design is made to their specifications. In this way, they help to make our homes and workplaces more beautiful and comfortable.

Glassblower

A glassblower is a person who creates beautiful objects by blowing air into melted glass. They heat the glass until it’s soft and malleable and then use special tools to shape it into different forms such as vases, cups, bowls, and even sculptures. Glassblowing is a very skilled art form that requires a lot of practice and patience. Glassblowers often work in hot, noisy environments and must wear protective clothing to stay safe from the heat of the furnace. They work with clients to determine their goals and preferences, and then use their creative skills and technical knowledge to make those ideas a reality. Interior designers must also consider safety, accessibility, and building codes when creating their designs.

Make-Up Artist

A makeup artist is a person who applies makeup to enhance or alter someone’s appearance. They work in a variety of settings, such as fashion shows, television and film productions, theatre, or special events like weddings. Surface Pattern Designer

A Surface Pattern Designer is someone who creates designs for mass-manufactured products like clothing, wallpaper, and wrapping paper. They use their creativity and artistic skills to come up with patterns that are unique, eye-catching, and can be repeated perfectly on a large scale.  These designers draw inspiration from different sources such as nature, fashion, art, and architecture, and use various tools such as pencils, paints, and computer programs to create their designs.  The designs are often in a ‘seamless pattern repeat’, which means the pattern can be repeated over and over again without any visible seams or gaps.

Tattoo Artist

A tattoo artist is a person who creates permanent designs on a person’s skin using a needle and ink. They work with their clients to create unique designs that are meaningful and special to them. Tattoo artists may work in a tattoo shop or run their own businesses. They need to have artistic talent and be able to draw or design appealing and well-crafted tattoos. They also need to be skilled in using tattoo equipment and following proper safety procedures to prevent infections or injuries. Videographer / Camera Operator

A videographer is a person who captures video footage for different purposes, such as films, documentaries, events, or commercials. Some videographers focus on wedding or event videos, while others work in television or film production. To make a living, videographers may work on a freelance basis, or they may be employed by production companies, television networks or advertising agencies.

Web Designer

A website designer is a person who creates the way a website looks and works. They use their creativity and computer skills to design a website that is easy to navigate and looks good. They choose colours, fonts, and images to make the website look appealing to people who visit it. They also work with other professionals to ensure the website is easy to use and works properly. Website designers are important because they help businesses and people to create an online presence and showcase their products or ideas to the world. Without website designers, the internet would not look as amazing and would be harder to use.
