Art Club Activity – Lizard Bananas!

This is a fun art club activity to try with your students, and certainly a little different. An extra-curricular activity is meant to offer something the curriculum doesn’t and this definitely ticks that box. Your students may think you’ve gone bananas!

You need to cut out and tape the lizard image, or any suitable image, to your banana. Using a needle, prick the paper wherever it is black. This will imprint the image onto your banana. Essentially, this is a stippling activity. You can peel back the lizard image to take a peek at any time.

Keep going until the image is completely pricked onto the banana. Pretty simple, huh! Make sure you photograph your bananas as they continue to darken and ripen.

Buying enough bananas for a large class or club might be too expensive, but perhaps your school canteen could help. Or maybe you could ask students to bring a banana to school? If you are worried about food waste, students could eat the bananas after they photograph them.

I’m sure if you put your thinking cap on, you can think of all manner of things that could go on a banana. There is a page of lizard/snake images below which are free to download.

Are your lessons geared towards 5-12 grades?

Absolutely. I teach students between the ages of 11-18. I know many art teachers have used my lessons with younger students too.
