8 YouTube Videos that make great Art Lesson Starters
Videos can make great art lesson starters. If you are lucky enough to be able to access Youtube in your classroom, you’ll know what a great source of inspiration they can be. I’ve selected the videos below because they would all make an inspirational starter to an art lesson, and all for different reasons. Each are under 8 minutes because I know, as art teachers, we’re all trying to fit so much into a lesson. You’ll always be able to find these useful videos here, so bookmark this page now!
This first video by Owen Tat is mainly a time-laspe of a cat drawing. It demonstrates some quality drawing and also how to mask the edge of your paper and how to create the effect that light is coming from behind the object of the drawing. I think it’s particularly valuable to see that 3 drawings at the end which show the progress he had made over 2 years. Fantastic to show students that they are going to keep getting better!
This next video features portrait artist Joshua Miels. I think this is worth sharing with students as it’s all about the struggle and he advocates risk taking. It’s valuable to show that artists who are clearly highly accomplished struggle too.
It’s useful to have a ‘How to Draw an Eye’ video up your sleeve as most high school art teachers get students to draw eyes at some point. This video shows your students just how detailed you’d like their drawings to be. (If they got half as much detail you’d be pleased!) So many videos of drawing eyes on Youtube are so long your students wouldn’t have time to draw; this video is 3.19. It uses a range of media and would make an inspiring art lesson starter. Why not get your students to watch it for homework?
‘Drawing is Important – Why YOU should do it’ is an amazing video by Dan Beardshaw where he speaks on this subject and includes so many valid points. The time lapse video shows his drawings build up and can’t fail to inspire. Why not use this video when students are considering opting for art or as an inspiring start to a lesson?
The short video below shows your students how to gradate paint. It’s only two and a half minutes long but shows the process perfectly in an upbeat and easy to follow way.
This video has oodles of inspiration and feel good. I think this one is a great one to show your students just before their exams. This is for all the artists, the creatives, the adventures and for those who want to get up and do things. Most of all it’s for those who want to follow their passions no matter what!
Below is another Dan Beardshaw video. His channel is definitely worth following and you should suggest to your students that they follow too. All seven of the tips in the following video are excellent. They may be tips that we have all told our students over the years but I think it’s a great reminder.
If your students create iPad art you must show them this mind blowing video by Kyle Lambert. I know it’s been shown often on social media, but I don’t get bored of it!
