Experimental Mark Making with Coffee

By The Arty Teacher - March 23, 2020

Mark making with coffee is a fun activity you can do at home.  ‘Mark making’ is an art term used to describe the lines, patterns or textures we make when we create a piece of art.  It’s interesting to see what tools you can find in your home to draw with and this video uses two strengths of coffee as paint.  Watch the video and then have a go yourself.

There are lots of mark making teaching resources on The Arty Teacher.

Thank you Sarah for so many inspiring ideas. Your site is wonderful and has been so much help for the online teaching. I’m sure I will be visiting on a regular basis now and once I have more time would be glad to share some of my other resources too.

I adapted your coffee art idea Sarah to use in a live online video lesson, the children loved it! Thank you so much.

    Dear Sarah,

Thanks a lot for sharing such inspiring ideas.
I’m a MS and HS Brazilian bilingual art teacher .
I’m retired,62 years old but resumed art teachinhg in English, which has been my career for 25 years ,so we do need sharing ideas lesson plans, during this tough time we’ve all have been through.Teaching art online has been very hard and more demanding than face-to face art classes.I’ve been feeling overewhelmed and like an apprentice regarding technology.I’m having such a hard time filling in lesson plans, both in school’s system and school’s cloud, and thus using Zoom to give my online lessons.I’ve never thought,I’d be teaching art seated for every 50 minute class in my career!Well,I talked too much,I just need to close with a big Thank You and a request :keep up the awesome work!!!You’ve been helping all art teachers in this fragile world…

    Sincerely

    Ana Luiza

I agree and empathize with all of the above. Add on the fact that I am NEW to teaching Art, as of Jan! I transferred for health reasons to independent study. Health is better and love the position but ohmygoodness, all the ins and outs!
Thank you, thank you, thank you! I think I can, I think I can, and you helped make this possible.
        Blessings<3
        Laura
